That’s because the machine is actually still on when the power is off. The sudden startup of the machine on its own\u00a0could frighten folks if they don’t know this can happen. If the plugged-in player does\u00a0not have a cartridge\u00a0inserted, the machine will simply say “player on” but if\u00a0a cartridge is in the machine, the cartridge will start to play the book. The voice coming from the machine\u00a0is not\u00a0a prowler\u00a0in your home. It’s just\u00a0the narrator\u00a0from the book\u00a0talking to you.\u00a0 When the machine is not plugged in and\u00a0the machine is powered off, the machine is obviously not affected\u00a0when power is restored from an outage.
