NLS Music Notes Blog

It is with great pleasure that I tell you about a new blog, NLS Music Notes. On May 15, 2014, this blog debuted with the post, “Welcome to the NLS Musc Notes Blog.” The post says this “blog will highlight the Music Section work in acquiring, cataloging, transcribing and preserving of collections as well as information about them. As a full service collection, the Music Section will post features of NLS Music Section resources for beginning music students as well as materials for those more advanced in all instruments. The Music Section offers all types of music  scores, books and magazines. The blog will also feature musicians, aspiring musician, music students, and all those who embrace music.” Find in the inaugural post links to 2 great performance clips.

The NLS Music Section has the largest collection of music braille in the world. The music collection includes large print and audio as well as braille.

May 2014 Bestsellers List

The Bestsellers List compiled monthly by NLS combines information taken from the bestseller lists of the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, and the Washington Post.

Bestsellers are included in the report when they appear on one of the above bestseller lists for a month or more.

Once a title appears in the report with an NLS book number, it will not appear on future reports.

The acronyms used for newspapers and book clubs in the NLS bestseller report are:

The enclosed report compiled monthly by NLS combines information taken from the bestseller lists of the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, and the Washington Post.

Integrated Employment forums

Books About Blindness for Children and Young People

From the MUSEUM of the AMERICAN PRINTING HOUSE for the BLIND is a list of Books About Blindnes for Children and Young People. Also, The Pirate of Kindergarten by George Ella Lyon is another book that speaks to understanding differences among people with vision issues.

These books come as suggestions from Librarians who subscribe to LBPH, the Libraries for the Blind and Physically Handicapped listserv.

New SHELF Titles May 2 2014

The Talking Books Plus online catalog, also referred to as the  OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog), is a searchable database of  titles recorded and provided by NLS ( National Library Services for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.) This online  catalog now includes the SHELF  (Shared Electronic File) collection to provide even more offerings for our members.  The downloadable titles now total 3,486. To find new SHELF titles in the OPAC, click the Browse tab to find All SHELF TITLES, then click “See more” to search “Within 1 month”,  “Within 3 months” or “Since last year ” under  “Recently Added.”

Global Accessibility Awareness Day May 15

The 2014 Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) is May 15th.  On that day, designers, developers, usability professionals and everyone else is encouraged to take an hour to experience first hand the impact of digital accessibility. Use a mobile device to caption a video.  Follow YouTube or 3Play Media for Vimeo  information to add captions. Register to attend one of the In Person public events.
