Special Needs Emergency Registry
By Alicia Waters | November 8, 2011
Recently, Mother Nature reminded us again that she can be unpredictable. Severe weather can cause challenges for Rhode Islanders who have special healthcare needs. We want to make sure that everyone knows about the Rhode Island Special Needs Emergency Registry (RISNER). The Registry is a joint effort of the Rhode Island Department of Health (HEALTH) and the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency (RIEMA). The Registry’s goal is to identify Rhode Islanders with disabilities, chronic conditions, or other special healthcare needs who may require special assistance during emergencies. Information in the Registry is shared with state and local first responders (police, fire, EMS) and emergency management officials. Enrollment in the Registry does not guarantee assistance, but does allow first responders to appropriately plan and prepare for the needs of the community.
If you, your family members, or anyone else you know has a special healthcare need, please consider enrolling in the Registry. Anyone can enroll online . If you have any questions about the Registry, please contact Jeff Stevens at 222-4783 or Jeffrey.Stevens@health.ri.gov
Additionally, as we enter the colder months we are also entering flu season. Preparedness is key in fighting the flu. The easiest and most effective way to protect yourself and your loved ones from getting the flu is to get a flu vaccination. Supplies of the flu vaccine are plentiful this year. School-located clinics started September 30 and will continue through December. Click here for information about influenza, school flu clinics or public flu clinics or call 222-5960.
