Child star: an autobiography DB 29049
Temple, Shirley. Reading time: 23 hours, 16 minutes.
Read by Mitzi Friedlander.

In her autobiography, which also tends to be a social history, Black focuses on her life through 1953. She describes her experience as a child star and portrays daily filmings, her indomitable mother, her early marriage to an alcoholic and abusive husband, and her second marriage to Charlie Black. Not covered, however, is her career as a diplomat and stateswoman. Some strong language.

At six, Shirley Temple was the number one box office draw. Her dimpled smile and her singing and dancing raised the spirits of depression-era families. In this straightforward, admiring account, Edwards describes Temple’s role as this century’s most famous child star, her decline at adolescence, her reincarnation as a political figure, and her courageous struggle with breast cancer.
