Burst of Technology Helps Blind See
By Alicia Waters | September 28, 2009
The New York Times article, Burst of Technology Helps Blind to See, reports mixed news. The good news is that there is hope that the Blind can see. Scientists are researching different methods to help different causes of blindness and clinicians are testing in actual humans. There is this push because about one in 28 Americans, 40 and over, are blind and have vision so poor that even with glasses, medicine or surgery, everyday tasks are difficult, according to the National Eye Institute, a federal agency. That number is expected to double in the next 30 years. Advances in technology, genetics, brain science and biology are making the goal to restore sight more feasible. Clinical trials include gene therapy, implanting electrodes, capsule implants, and a procedure called modified osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis.
