Marrakesh Treaty Ratification
By Alicia Waters | February 11, 2019
“The National Library Service (NLS) has received notice from the Copyright Office at the Library of Congress that the United States has officially joined the “Marrakesh Treaty” to Facilitate Access to Published Works for Persons Who Are Blind, Visually Impaired or Otherwise Print Disabled, by depositing its instrument of ratification with the World Intellectual Property Organization. This signifies that the United States has 90 days to begin full participation. NLS is very pleased with this latest step toward making it easier for those with print disabilities in signatory nations to access printed works in accessible formats such as braille and digital audio files. NLS has been working with groups within the Library of Congress and throughout the Legislative Branch to determine the full implications of the treaty and its impact on processes at NLS and network libraries.” Feb. 8, 2019 (Karen Keninger, NLS Director)
