Firmware version of digital player

By Alicia Waters | September 18, 2013

If a member is having trouble playing a book or magazine or using the bookshelf mode, check the firmware version of the player. Then call Talking Books Plus (401-574-9310) with the information for correction or further troubleshooting.

Firmware version 2.1.0 has a bookshelf feature that allows the user to place more than one book on a cartridge or flash drive.

Firmware upgrade 2.1.8 allows the player to recognize a magazine as a magazine and the associated announcement.

The effort is in support of a HUD grant received by the RI Statewide Planning Department to solicit outreach from a wide and inclusive number of Rhode Island residents to facilitate input, thoughts and ideas about statewide plans that will be developed regarding economic development, growth centers, transportation, water, urban sprawl, workforce development and a host of other topics. The planning process requires feedback and input from as many Rhode Islanders as possible.

If you are interested and want to understand more about Rhode Map RI and have a voice in the process, Rhode Map RI is hosting (4) regional forums to bring this discussion to as many people as possible. Cuckoos Calling by JK Rowling

By Alicia Waters | July 18, 2013

NLS is in the process of adding Cuckoos Calling by JK Rowling to the national collection. Talking Books Plus should have this book in its catalog once it’s in the national collection.

Here is what a Librarian who is reading the book on Audible is saying about the book. Strike, the protagonist, combines toughness and vulnerabilitiy that is quite endearing. Robin is his gloriously hypercompetent secretary/sidekick. Be forewarned though that the language is quite strong and there is violence. It is about 16 hours of recording.

Commerical Audiobooks Unrated

By Alicia Waters | July 18, 2013

NLS is partnering with commercial audio publishers to obtain audiobooks so it can make titles available to Talking Books Plus members in a more timely manner. It may not be possible to assign sex, violence, and strong language content descriptors to these titles. Thus, a number of titles acquired from commercial audiobook publishers will be characterized as “unrated.”

This information come from the NLS Operations Alert, Ed O’Reilly, Head, Collection Development Section.
