The Library of Congress Wants Your Opinion
By Alicia Waters | February 19, 2019
Beginning in early March, a sample of patrons across the country who currently use services provided by the Library of Congress’s National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped–also known as NLS–will be invited to participate in a nationwide survey. The information collected from this survey will guide NLS as they move forward on a variety of projects to enhance and expand the braille and talking-book program and help us understand the needs of patrons. As a part of NLS’s cooperating network of libraries, RI Talking Books Library encourages invited patrons to respond to the survey at their earliest convenience. Thanks for sharing your opinions!

Marrakesh Treaty Ratification
By Alicia Waters | February 11, 2019
“The National Library Service (NLS) has received notice from the Copyright Office at the Library of Congress that the United States has officially joined the “Marrakesh Treaty” to Facilitate Access to Published Works for Persons Who Are Blind, Visually Impaired or Otherwise Print Disabled, by depositing its instrument of ratification with the World Intellectual Property Organization. This signifies that the United States has 90 days to begin full participation. NLS is very pleased with this latest step toward making it easier for those with print disabilities in signatory nations to access printed works in accessible formats such as braille and digital audio files. NLS has been working with groups within the Library of Congress and throughout the Legislative Branch to determine the full implications of the treaty and its impact on processes at NLS and network libraries.” Feb. 8, 2019 (Karen Keninger, NLS Director)

Many of our members have called to tell us that they have not received their talking books. Unfortunately, this seems to be happening across the U.S. and we are trying to figure out why this is happening. Please know that when you have called the RI TBL staff to place requests, we have entered all of your requests and they have been sent through the system to be mailed out to you. Hopefully, the mail delivery will be back to normal soon.
