Not Getting Your Books?? – Request List Only vs Auto Select
By Alicia Waters | July 12, 2018
Have you at times wondered “where are my books”? If you have chosen to receive books from your “Request List Only”, you must be sure there are requests/titles in your list or nothing will be sent out by the system. Also, there may not be any hard copies of your title(s) available at the time of your request. If you know you have titles in your request list, but you haven’t received your books, please call us at 401-574-9310 so that we can either request an inter-library loan or a duplicated copy for you. You can add titles directly to your request list by going to the online catalog at www.olis.ri.gov/tbl and clicking “Catalog” on the right hand side of the page. Be sure to select titles that are available as hard-copy for mailing and place your selection(s) in your “Book Basket”. You may also want to select “Rush” if you need the book right away. You may select up to 3 titles at a time for “Rush” service. Once you are done click “Proceed to Checkout.” You may also decide to have your books sent via the “Auto Select” method. Auto select will choose books from your preferences on a turn-around basis until your maximum number of books out is reached. TBL staff can tailor your preferences by adding subject matter, authors, exclusions criteria, etc. to your account. Please email us at talking.books@olis.ri.gov or call us Monday – Friday from 8:30 am – 4:00 pm for assistance.

Another Big Step Toward Marrakesh Treaty Ratification
By Alicia Waters | May 24, 2018
Published May 22, 2018 by Carrie Russell
Today, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted unanimously to send the Marrakesh Treaty Implementation Act (S.2559) to the full Senate for a vote. If passed by two-thirds of the Senate, the legislation will go to the President for final signature.
For more than ten years, associations representing the print disabled, the Library Copyright Alliance (LCA) and other civil society organizations have worked to increase the availability of accessible reading materials for people with print disabilities. With the Implementation Act, the United States will join thirty-seven other countries whose laws allow for the cross-border sharing of accessible content. According to the U.S. State Department, Americans with print disabilities will have 350,000 more accessible titles available to them with the law’s passage. People with print disabilities that speak languages other than English will have access to accessible content in foreign languages.
Today’s vote is another promising development to full ratification and implementation of an international treaty—the first to provide an exception to international copyright law.

Exciting News: The Marrakesh Treaty Introduced in the U.S. Senate
By Alicia Waters | April 6, 2018
The Marrakesh Treaty has been introduced in the U.S. Senate with a hearing expected sometime this April.
The Marrakesh Treaty, adopted by the member states of the World Intellectual Property Organization in 2013, requires countries to enact copyright exceptions that allow the making and distribution of accessible format copies such as braille or audiobooks, including by importation and exportation. The Treaty is largely based on the existing exception in the U.S. Copyright Act,
17 U.S.C. § 121. The Marrakesh Treaty Implementation Act amends the Copyright Act to ensure compliance with the Marrakesh Treaty.
