Defective Book? Lost the Container?
By Alicia Waters | October 3, 2018
If you find that you have a defective digital book cartridge, you can request a replacement of that book/title by calling (401)574-9310 or by emailing talking.books@olis.ri.gov. Place the defective cartridge back in its container with a note and mail it back to Perkins. Book containers are always opened and checked when they arrive back at Perkins.
If you have lost a container and have a cartridge to send back, you may place it in an envelope and mail it back to the address below, or place it inside a container with another book with a note, letting the Perkins staff know that one of the cartridges belongs to another book.

Accessible Textbook Options for Blind or Visually Impaired
By Alicia Waters | September 14, 2018
The Talking Books Library staff have received calls from members looking for textbooks in accessible formats. The Louis Database from the American Printing House for the Blind is a great place to search for the material you need. This database will allow you to search for titles in specific formats (Braille, Large Print, Sound and E-files).
There is also a lot of great information and links to providers of accessible textbooks on the web at AccessWorld Magazine. Access World Magazine is a free publication from the American Foundation for the Blind.

NLS Free Music Library Service
By Alicia Waters | August 30, 2018
The National Library Service provides free music materials that are circulated directly to patrons from the NLS headquarters in Washington, D.C. The NLS music collection is the largest of its kind in the world, with approximately 25,000 titles.
Patrons may access a collection of braille, large-print, and recorded instructional materials about music and musicians. They may also obtain free subscriptions to magazines produced in audio, braille, and large print. All materials are circulated postage free, and many digital audio and ebraille materials are available for download over the Internet. Machines needed to use the audio cartridges are provided to eligible users without charge. Musical recordings intended solely for listening are not included in the music collection, as they are readily available commercially and from public libraries.
Eligibility and Application for Service
To be eligible for music services, an individual must:
- Reside in the United States or its territories or be a U.S. citizen living abroad.
- Be unable to read regular print because of a temporary or permanent visual or physical disability.
Anyone currently registered with an NLS cooperating library that serves individuals who are blind or have a physical disability qualifies to receive music books and scores and should contact the NLS Music Section directly. Other eligible individuals may sign up for service by completing the Application for Library Service: Individuals and returning it to their cooperating library or to the NLS Music Section. Once an application is approved, patrons will be contacted by their library and may contact the Music Section to begin receiving service. (NLS 2018)
