By Alicia Waters | November 9, 2012
If a loved one or friend is downloading books on a National Library Services (NLS) digital cartridge for a member and the loved one or friend lives in another state, a mailing container for the NLS digital cartridge may be purchased for the loved one or friend to use to send downloaded titles on the cartridge to a member as Free Matter for the Blind through the postal service. Perkins Products in Massachusetts sell the mailing container for the NLS digital cartridge for $2.00. USB Flash Drives and Battery Life
By Alicia Waters | October 23, 2012
Recently at the national level, there has been talk about the amount of battery life that exists when an USB flash drive is connected to the side AT port of the NLS digital player. The USB flash drive suspension problem that members were experiencing was corrected back in late 2011. The correction meant all conventional USB flash drives can now be used to play books on the NLS digital players. However, the correction also caused higher power consumption which in turn caused a 30 percent reduction in available battery play time or a maximum of 19 to 20 hours of battery charge when using a USB flash drive.

By Alicia Waters | October 11, 2012
The Professional Development and Reserach Institute on Blindness has a website about Braille activities for children. They say that the tactile learning activities and braille are targeted for the very young. However, older children who have cognitive delays may benefit as well. NLS Consultant, MaryBeth Wise says these activities may be useful in developing pre-reading programs and activities in libraries. Teachers and School Librarians are encouraged to look at the site as well.
